Is it legal for a travel agent to charge me "service fee" for requesting a refund?

I booked a trip but decided to go to another agent since it was much cheaper than the first one. I requested a refund from the first travel agent but she said I had to send her a check or money order for service charge so she can do the refund. It's been a year and I have not received any refund. Is it legal for any company to charge you a "service fee" if you want your money back?|||You should be more worried about the refund (that you haven't got) than about a service fee.

Yes, it's legal to charge a service fee, BUT honestly I never would do business with people charging service or restocking fees (most of the time the fees are bogus). That's why you should ask and read about their refund policy before closing the deal.

But again, your biggest problem is not getting the refund. And in my experience there was no need to ask you for any check or money order for the service fees; all they had to do was to deduct the fees from your refund.

It seems you were scammed twice.|||Legal? Yes.

Confused why she couldn't just deduct the amount of the 'service fee' and send you the remainder.

Now THAT sounds a little fishy....|||Nothing is free in this world. They want paid for the paperwork and labor to to it.
