Tipping waiters , when there is service charge ?

this is something i never understood , to tell the truth i don't tip because i'm already paying service charge which is usually around 15% on the bill itself , but whoever i'm with usually tips , should i tip even thou i'm already paying the service charge , won't i be paying for service twice ?

a waiter once told me that they don't get the service charge. then who does ?

so what are your thoughts when it comes to tipping when you're already paying service charge of 15%+|||I f i was already paying 15% service.......Hell No would i tip|||it depends in which resturants. Some pay the waiters a minimum salary and the tips is the rest.|||My kind of rule of thumb on this is that if a service charge has applied then I don't tip, unless the waiter I've had was particularly good. It was maybe just that at that restaurant that that waiter told you they never got the service charge because that's where it's supposed to go, which is why waiting staff are usually minimum wage- i.e the restaurant doesn't (in theory) need to pay more than that because the service charge and/or tips supplements that. I disagree with that, I know for myself that waiting is hard work and I think if waiting staff got paid a decent wage to start with then standards of service in restaurants would be much higher but I'm just an ex-waitress so what would I know?|||of course hes going to tell you that if he wants a tip.

if gratuities are charged on your bill then the waiters all get a share.on their paycheck but as for "service charge" . i would ask what exactly that is for|||Well, I live in Germany at the moment, and they add a service charge to the bill as well. The custom here is to just leave whatever change of a dollar is left over on the table for a tip, so if my bill is 12,49鈧?and I give him 15鈧? I will just give the waiter the ,51鈧?change and pocket the 2鈧?coin I get back.|||The service charge is "in lieu of" tipping and is to make sure that the staff get what they would have. If you tip in addition to paying the service charge, you might be paying an equivalent of 30% for the service of the wait staff, and I think that is excessive.

If you have a party of more than 8 people, some restaurants automatically put on a service charge or a cover charge.

Even in France where service is included in the price of restaurant meals, it is customary to leave a few extra Euros for the server.|||A service charge is a tip.|||if you are paying a service charge then you don't tip.

check with the waiting staff if they receive money in leiu of tips.

if they do not, and you particularly want your waiter to have the tip, then you can deduct the service charge from the bill, and pay the waiter the cash directly. service charges are not compulsory, although many establishments ike you to think they are.

i used to work in a restaurant that had service charge, and the mean old git would only give me 拢5 per week in lieu of tips. one table would cover that, so the rest he was coining in himself!

dont be afraid to ask your waiter, and assert yourself with the management if necessary.|||If there is a service charge built in, you don't need to tip unless you feel they did exceptionally well and then that's up to you. The tip is normally the service charge :)|||There is usually a service charge there for larger parties because the server will end up working twice as hard. Some nicer resteraunts might have service charges no matter how many people you have. They have this because the waiter works their butt off for less then minimum wage and people still dont tip them. If you had great service and will definelty be coming back then of course you can always tip more then the service charge. If the service was bad and you wouldnt of tipped more then the service charge anyways then no dont tip more. But its there becuase lots of people dont botter to tip at all.|||tipping devalues the person who served you.
