Is there anyway to beat the extra service charge on smart phones with at&t?

Like, if I get an unlocked smartphone or something like that, if I want to connect it with at%26amp;t will I have to pay that ridiculous $30/mo data-service plan fee? If that won't work, is there any way to get around paying it?|||It is rediculous!. If you switch to Sprint there is no additional charge. It's included in the plan. The internet is much faster. too.
