Can i refuse to pay a service charge in a restaurant ? in the uk?

tip i dont mind .it,s the service charge i do|||If the menu states that a service charge will be added you cannot refuse as you would be aware at the time of ordering.

If they have merely added it to the bill then you can refuse.

I only give a tip for exceptional service, I expect good service as normal.|||U have to pay i,m afraid !!!!|||If it states on the menu that a service charge will be added, you can't opt out - although you can walk out. If the menu states a price and doesn't mention a service charge, you can refuse to pay more than it says on the menu.|||Yes you can refuse, when paying the bill ask for the service charge to be removed if you were not happy with the service.|||A service charge is meant to be in place of a tip, not in addition to it. Yes, you can refuse providing you make it clear when you order your food. The management of the restaurant do however have the right to refuse to serve you.|||Tip and Service Charge - Isnt that the same in the UK? Some places include the charge in the bill. But we still tip, might not be much say, 拢2 on a 拢10 bill.... its each to their own, depends if ur rich or not! :)|||Section 15, Supply of Goods %26amp; Services Act:

(1) Where, under a contract for the supply of a service, the consideration for the service is not determined by the contract, left to be determined in a manner agreed by the contract or determined by the course of dealing between the parties, there is an implied term that the party contracting with the supplier will pay a reasonable charge.

What this translates to is that you are expected to pay the service charge, but it is negotiable. If you received poor service then you can refuse. Most reasonable restaurants will want to know why so they can improve.

If you run into difficulties, don't go to that restaurant again, write a letter of complaint to them and tell your friends not to go there, too.|||Yes you can refuse, and you will probably get the same response as I did during a recent visit to New York, when I got fed up with having to tip everybody.|||First of all you can not refuse to pay it. It is part of there service.

And Sparky no you can't refuse if you don't like the service, you just don't leave a tip if you don't like the service. That service charge is a mandatory fee put on meals and anything that someone does a service for you. Good Luck
