Why do people think the service charge in a restaurant is a tip?

ITS NOT!! The service charge is exactly that. In England when the practice began the service charge was a means to show you exactly what your meal would cost and exactly what your waiter would cost. Its his/her normal wage. You still need to tip in restaurants in England. If it was a tip it would be a "GRATUITY" and I have seen a few restaurants in the tourist traps which do have this on the bill also but probably in response to no-one leaving tips thinking the service charge was a tip!

In my restaurant i'm thinking of raising the prices and doing away with the service charge to stop the confusion.|||Well, I guess my best answer by your question would be, because people are stupid. Plain and simple. Good Luck on that resturant, we need more people in this world to come up with idiot proof stuff!|||I get mad when they add a service charge and if they don't they always get a good tip. I want them to know that our large party appreciated them but i don' feel that we take more time than if we all happened to come in at the same time and sit separately. No service charge=good tip
