If you go to a restaurant and they have added a service charge do you have to pay it? I went for a meal the other day and the bill seemed high, after reading it they added a 15% service charge. We payed it but the service was terrible and we would not have left a tip. Can you say I'm not paying this? Please no Americans, only British answers.|||Yes you can refuse to pay a service charge.|||Some restaurants automatically add a 15-18% service charge to parties over 6. If they added it to you bill for a smaller party, I would question it. Particularly if it wasn't stated up front.
They do that a lot in Europe, and the waiters tend to be pretty lame when they know they are getting a tip.
